This month we welcome guest speaker Dr Will Barker – CEO/co-founder Mint Innovation.

Following seven years at LanzaTech – Will spent several years scouring New Zealand for the next exciting ‘waste to value’ technology to commercialise. Having reviewed a tonne of really good tech without success – Will went back to business basics to find a commercialisable proposition that maximises the delta between waste input value and product value.  He identified that opportunity in recovering GOLD from electronic waste – founded Mint and has been focused on global deployment of the world’s first biotech solution for this particularly noxious waste stream ever since.

Mint raised just over $5m late last year and has been furiously scaling the precious metal recovery process from lab scale pilot to full commercial scale ahead of global deployment. With a team of 15 primarily technical personnel based in East Tamaki – the company is progressing toward technical and business milestones prior to deploying the first full scale commercial facilities in 2020.

Will is originally a chemist and has experience in IP, venture capital, biotech and cleantech and is keen to share some of the highlights and challenges of working in the New Zealand start up ecosystem for way too long.
